Ho’o Infinity

New work in development to premiere at La MaMa in 2027.

Are we really all stardust? Our hearts? Our food? Ho'o Infinity travels from scarcity to abundance through the lens of hula and humanity. Taking inspiration from home parties filled with mele and hula and the Kumulipo (a historical chant that charts the final Hawaiian monarchy's genealogical path from the beginning of time), this new work layers poetics and science with dance, theater, and food! It begins with the lipo emptiness and evolves to delicious communal celebration.

This contemporary performance work utilizes movement reflective of Hawai'i. The choreography echoes familiar shapes and dynamics of hula. It takes advantage of the repetitive structure of oli and its onomatopoeic evolution, similar to the advent of minimalistic music and choreography.

The dance layers the idea of minimalism with scarcity, both the emptiness at the beginning of the universe and the losses of population and culture due to colonialism.  It layers Bauch's heritage from Hawai'i and New York's post modern movement.

An accumulation. It evolves, expanding in energy and space. Eroding the performative fourth wall, bringing in a few tables and chairs, the performance morphs into a pa’ina, a casual party with Hawaiian cuisine, live music and kanikapila hula. This is a joyous community gathering where mele and hula are shared not as performance but in communion.
